The mobile phone as a free-rotation laboratory

چکیده
Modern mobile phones contain a three-axis microelectromechanical system (MEMS) gyroscope, capable of taking accurate measurements the angular velocity along three principal axes phone with sampling rate 100 Hz or better. If is tossed in air, then, neglecting air resistance, it free rotation (rotation absence torque) respect to its centre mass, and phone's gyroscope can be used record rotational dynamics. This enables experimental investigation rotation. In this paper, we use demonstrate steady states for about two axes, instability third corresponding intermediate moment inertia. We also show approximate conservation momentum kinetic energy during motion compare data numerical solution Euler's equations Our results capability smartphones investigating rotation, should interest college university teachers developing "at home" physics labs remote learning.

The Mobile Phone Ensemble As Classroom
In Fall 2009 the University of Michigan offered a course called ”Building a Mobile Phone Ensemble”. In the spirit of using commodity hardware as teaching platforms, we report the outcome of this first attempt at teaching on this topic. The course was offered to seniors and graduate students in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science as well as Music. The student had to learn to design their...
متن کاملDeveloping a Mobile Phone Application for Common Radiotherapy Calculations
Accuracy of the radiotherapy requires some routine quality control and dosimetry calculations, which would be done by radiotherapy physicists. Due to the increasing use of computers and simulation software in medical science, as well as trends indicating its continued growth, this study aims to develop a new smart-phone application to perform common radiotherapy-related calculations. Computatio...
متن کاملMicrophone as Sensor in Mobile Phone Performance
Many mobile devices, specifically mobile phones, come equipped with a microphone. Microphones are high-fidelity sensors that can pick up sounds relating to a range of physical phenomena. Using simple feature extraction methods, parameters can be found that sensibly map to synthesis algorithms to allow expressive and interactive performance. For example blowing noise can be used as a wind instru...
متن کاملMobile phone polling as a tool for teaching information literacy
While mobile technologies are ubiquitous among students and increasingly used in many aspects of libraries, they have yet to gain traction in information literacy instruction. Librarians at Champlain College piloted mobile phone polling in a first-year classroom as a less expensive and more versatile alternative to clickers. By utilizing a technology that virtually all students have in their po...
